Jeret "Speedy" Peterson
started skiing at the age of seven in his
hometown of Boise, Idaho and has never
looked back. At the age of sixteen he made
the U.S. Ski Team becoming the youngest
Aerialist to ever make the team at that
time.
So where did the nickname "Speedy" come
from? When Jeret left for his first summer
camp in Lake
Placid,
New York he had borrowed his uncles snowmobiling
helmet and had a bright black and white
checkered life jacket in which to wear
while jumping into the swimming pool. At
the ripe old age of eleven he hadn't quite
grasped the idea of waiting in line and
would step over all of the other campers'
skis and head straight to the front of
the line. Getting in five or six jumps
to all of the other kids' two or three,
the coaches at the camp nicknamed him "Speed
Racer" after the popular cartoon being
shown on MTV. Shortened to "Speedy" the
nickname has stuck ever since!
He won the ’99 national junior aerials title, collected aerials bronze
at the 2000 and ‘01 Junior World Championships, and was 2001 Freestyle
Junior Skier of the Year selected by Ski Racing.
His enthusiasm has paid off, though. Speedy started to climb to the top of the
podium at an early age. Adding Junior National Champion, Two time Junior World
Bronze Medalist as well as being named the 2001 Junior Freestyle Skier of the
Year by Ski Racing Magazine to his list. Topping all of this off with a berth
on the U.S. Olympic Team... All being done by the age of Twenty!!!
Since 2002 Speedy has been working on
qualifying new and more difficult tricks
every season. He has competed his signature “hurricane” jump
numerous times on snow. With this trick
it has placed him in the World Record Books
as the highest aerial score in history!!
In 2005 he had his best season ever, ranked
#1 in the world. There is so much more
ahead for Speedy and his “hurricane.” We
expect to see him win gold in 3rd Olympic
Games in Vancouver 2010!

Why I Chose The Special
Olympics Of Idaho For My Charity
I chose the Special Olympics of Idaho for two
reasons. I believe that every person should
have the ability to chase their dreams and
have the chance to prove themselves to the
world not based upon their disabilities but
rather on their strengths as humans and athletes.
I chose Idaho because that is where I grew
up and that is where my heart is.
